Yorkshire Amateur League Results for 24th September 2011

For the attention of Wendy Walker and Leon

On Saturday we had the preliminary and first rounds of the Yorkshire Old Boys’ Shield that not only includes teams from the Yorkshire Amateur League but also from the Humber Premier First Division, the East Riding Amateur League and one team from the Teeside League and one from the Sunderland & District League. The big clash was between hosts Humber Prem first Division leaders Scarborough Town and Yorkshire Amateur League champions Stanningley OB. Little between the sides before half time but Stanningley took charge in the second half and Carl Parkin notched the winning goal. Alwoodley travelled to Scarborough Athletic Res and after a mixed half in which the scores were level 3-3 at the break Alwoodley piled on the pressure in the second period to win 6-3 with their goals netted by Luke Willis 2, Graham Shaw 2, Gav Chittick (pen) and Andy Shaw. Old Batelians went goal crazy and Rob Bordman in particular as he notched seven against Leeds City OB with Sam Strickland 2, James Holroyd and Richard Spink also finding the net in an 11-1 battering. Batelians reward is a visit to Stanningley OB. One of the best matches was at Humber Prem Hessle Utd where Senr B Modernians went ahead after 20 minutes through Ben Bowman but Hessle equalised before the interval. Mod had no substitutes, and despite an injury to their goalscorer the eleven proudly battled on and were only denied in the ensuing penalty shoot out 4-3. Another game with the teams well matched was at four times Shield winners Malet Lambert YC that ended two apiece up to and including extra time with John Forrest at the double for FC Headingley before FC Headingley went out 4-3 on penalties. Shire Academics returned to form winning 5-1 at Long Riston with Luke Croager bagging four and Gordon Love one. Bramley Juniors did not have the rub of the green at Rapid Solicitors. They led thanks to Danny McMahon and Andy Horsman at the 90 minute mark but conceded two injury time goals to lose 3-2. Ealandians were held in the first half by Teeside league St Mary’s College, Middlesbrough. Aaron Brook gave Ealandians a second half advantage but in such a tight contest unsurprisingly St Mary’s equalised and then provided the winner – but for Ealandians by way of an OG. Another battle royal at Thornesians who were facing extra time against East Riding side Cross Keys Cottingham before Paul Warren sneaked the winner. In an all YAL tie Sandal Athletic went to St Nicholas and uncovered yet another star. This time it was Adam Peskett who bagged four goals in a 5-1 mini-triumph with Mark Wilson adding the fifth. Senior A Bainbridge struggled against Div 1 Centralians. David Kerr and Ben Turner gave Bainbridge a 2-0 lead but an 87th minute penalty by Liam Burley deservedly reduced the arrears and was the forerunner of a tense finale to the game.

In the preliminary round there was a cracking duel at Sandal Wanderers. Thanks to Robin Burton and Tom Harte the scores were level at two each at the break. Tom Jowitt put Sandal ahead but two late goals gave AFC Preston a ticket to the first round. Mark Heppenstall hit five for Huddersfield Amateur at Kingburn Athletic and with two penalties for Sam Frankland Amateur finished 7-0 winners. The shock defeat inflicted by Sunderland and District Vets champions and former Shield winners St Mary’s College OB on Trinity OB left hosts Trinity OB stunned. Although 1-2 down at the interval, Dom Hackney netting, they fully expected to breakdown the St Mary’s defence but failed miserably. There was an excellent game of football at Division 1 East Ardsley Wanderers who lost to Senr A Gildersome Spurs OB 7-3 after being 2-4 down at the interval. Scott Bates 2 and Jake Gray on song for East Ardsley but Ben Keedy starred for Spurs with five goals supported by Jordan Brereton and Mark Bedford. Spurs welcome Pinefleet Wolfreton in the first round. Rampant Beeston OB were much too strong for visiting East Riding outfit Swiss Cottage despite being an early goal down. Jamie Mitchell 2, Ben Bradley 2, OG, Liam Tyrer, Michael Lazaro, Richard Dunbar and Nikki Greatorey all netted to close the door on the visitors.

No Senior A fixtures but three in Senior B. North East Leeds travelled to Calverley Utd and goals from Ian Evans and Dan Wiseman gave them a 2-0 win that lifted them to fifth. Better display from Calverley Utd but still without either a point or a goal as they prop up the table. Top quality game took place at Collingham. Last season’s Senior B top scorer Brad Chambers gave Medics Res the lead after 22 minutes but parity restored by Alan Barker in the 35th minute. Brad doubled his tally around the hour mark but a deserved 85th minute equaliser from Andrew Widdison at the near post secured a point for the hosts. Grangefield top the Senior B table after taking a point at second placed St Bedes. The hosts took the lead through Alex McLoughlin late in the first period. By the 47th minute Matty Tomlinson had brought Grangefield back into the game and midway through the half Grant Jackson put them ahead 2-1. Within thirty seconds Bedes were naively allowed to level matters when a cross from Richard Walton was bundled into his own net by a Grangefield defender.

Visitors Beeston St Anthony’s lead Division 1 and this week played like league leaders. They were a fabulous 4-0 ahead by the break and although hosts Farsley Celtic Juniors had much more possession in the second half they failed to breakdown the Beeston defence. On target for Beeston were Shaun Sturman, Adam Connor, Neil Morgan and Luke Boyes. East Leeds Trinity enjoyed a wonderful first half against promoted Stanningley OB Res and could have been more than two goals up at half time. Stanningley retaliated to the extent they went 3-2 ahead but a superb free kick ensured the spoils were shared at three goals each. Daniel Foster 2 and Ronan Kerr were the marksmen for East Leeds Trinity OB with an OG, Mick Taylor and Mark Dickenson on the Stanningley score sheet. Alwoodley OB Res are playing superbly and went to Old Earth to defeat the promising Huddersfield Amateur Reserve side 3-1. Geoff Clarkson 2 and Kyle Spargo hit the back of the net for Alwoodley Res whose man of the match was Chris Markham with Sam Durkan responding for Amateur Res. Collegians were 2 goals up at the break against visitors Leeds Medics III. Super fit Medics III went into a 4-2 second half lead but the young Collegians side did reduce the arrears to 4-3. Damo Pawson netted twice for Collegians with Jordan Townend adding the third.

Woodhouse Moor Meths lead Division 2. They visited Colton Institute and, after James Baldwin had scored from the spot for Colton, Woodhouse Moor drew level by the break and then netted twice in the closing 10 minutes of the match. James Campbell 2 and Rob Holt were seen netbusting for Woodhouse. Leeds Independent are second and despite strikes from Paul Riley and Matt Horne for Shire Academics Res visitors Independent netted seven with Dave Johnson 4, Jermaine Richards, Joel Cooke and Damo Jenkinson all finding the net. Third placed Bramley Juniors III were tested to the full at Gildersome Spurs III but the Jamie Gray early second half effort guaranteed the three points. St Bedes OB Res went ahead from a Ross Jones header at FC Headingley with the latter responding when Alister Keetley tapped home after a Dan Morgan shot had been parried. The score remained at one apiece but chances missed at both ends of the park. A game of fluctuating fortunes at Medics IV who went 2-0 up before trailing 4-2 but recovering to take a point at 4-4 thanks to a double for substitute Chris Hughes. Medics IV well served by Paul Onions and Fergus Machin who added a goal each with a Mark Whittam triple and Tom Asher leading the fight back for Bainbridge.

In Div 3 Modernians lead the table with three wins from three games. Matty Campbell 3 and Stu Astall kept the run going after a 4-0 win at Heckmondwike GSOB. Second placed Colton Inst Res huffed and puffed and somehow broke the house down to conquer Centralians Res 2-1 but in their luckiest win for some time leading Div 2 scorer Chris Hick and Josh Naylor had netted by the 14th minute. Joe McParland provided the sole response from unlucky Centralians Res. Third placed Almondburians were surprisingly held by lowly Calverley Utd Res 2-2 with Chris Coates and Kev Brown leading the recovery after Gary Lumb and Adam Taylor had given Almondburians a 2-0 cushion. Scott Mollet became Division’s leading scorer after his hat trick and this, coupled with a goal from Mike Ruthven, allowed Ealandians to taste a 4-1victory against a much changed but young and promising Trinity OB Res side for which Nathan Tynan delighted his team mates by adding the consolation goal. In a joust were fortunes ebbed and flowed a hat trick for Stef Eberharter and a double for Doug Gaylor for Grangefield OB Res kept the Gav Parker, Mark Turner and Rodney Adam (pen) led Middleton riposte at bay in a 5-3 success.

Shadwell maintained their successful start to the campaign by defeating Thornesians Res 4-2 in an enterprising game. Jody Thornton, Josh Stainthorpe with his seventh of the campaign, Richard Speed and young Luther Dore adding the lustre for Shadwell with the Luther’s goal coming after defeating four men and slotting home. Goals from Thornes’ Jimmy Taylor and Chris Baines helped to make this a quality fixture. Second placed Norristhorpe maintained there 100% record by defeating promoted Beeston OB Res 3-0 with goals hammered home by Jason Collinson, Andy Dawson and Ashley Slater after a confident performance. Centralians III netted in the first half through Janghir Gulzar with Curtis Adams equalising for Sandal Ath Res with both managers more than satisfied with the way their team played. Mods III secured their first win of 11/12 by easing past Collegians Res 5-0. Despite a double for Mike Kitchen and an OG Batelians III fell to the youth of Leeds City OB III 5-3. Jacob Travis 4, Dave Holbrook 4, Sam Clegg 2 and Matt Handley 1 caused mayhem whilst defeating Leeds City OB Res 11-0.

Div 5 leaders Bramley Juniors out-smarted Thornes Res 8-2 courtesy of James Hawley 1, Danny Robinson 1, Chris Daniels 2, Danny Hart 2, Matty Lofthouse and OG with Lee Tintor and Andy MacTernan consoling Thornes III. Ryan Crossley 2 and Will Pittan gave Ealandians III a 3-0 half time lead against Huddersfield Amateur. Four goals in the final twenty minutes from Amateur purloined by Ross Perkins 2, Danny Jackson and Dave Broadbent secured an unlikely victory. Strike partners Lee Whitaker and Matty Robinson each bagged a hat trick with Johnny Harrison at the double as Wheelwright outplayed Middleton Park Res for whom Paul Barber added a little respectability at 8-1. An 94th minute goal for Jerome Yewdall for St Bedes III denied Shadwell Res their first point of the season. A pleasing opening game of the season for Cents IV with Joe Westgarth 2, Bob Guthrie 2, and the returning Kev Myers 1 providing the ammunition as Thornes IV fell 5-2. In form East Ardsley Res thank Johnny Byrnes 2, Anthony Rennison and Wayne Rennison (pen) as they progressed 4-2 against Mods IV.
