Yorkshire Amateur League Annual Presentation Evening – Wed 6th June 18

Postby neville » Thu Jun 07, 2018 11:30 am

The well planned and well organised evening, superbaly chaired by Tony Lewis, was held at the South Leeds Golf club with the Representation of the Cups, the Presentation to the Divisional winners and the handing of the Golden Boot to the leading scores in each Division, with these three features the focal point of the night, as ever.

Teams were selected for a special mention to recognise their achievements beyond the YAL during the season. The two prestigious awards were also named and greeted with warm applause from the teams and league officials present. The Shaun Turner Trophy, awarded for continuing outstanding work for his club, was won by Rob Herd of Shire Academics whose team joined the YOBL in 2006/07 and in the first season finished fourth in Division 1. Under the guidance of Rob the club now have four YAL teams that are a credit to our League,

The award of the Thornton Trophy is for dedication by an individual for the League in its broadest sense. This was recognised by the Thornton Trophy being won by Simon Cookson who has had a forty year involvement as a player, referee, Registration Secretary and Fixture secretary and yet, at the same time, assisted in whatever task needed his invaluable help, and particularly noted with the representative XI, and more recently for his superb contribution of his match reports on our website. The award is the Player’s and League’s way of both emphasising and thanking Simon for all that he had done.

Drighlington set the standard

The winners of the Premier Division were Drighlington after a superb battle with Stanley Utd, Leeds Medics and Alwoodley. The team joined us after one season in the Wakefield League, under the guidance of Bob Greenwood, three seasons ago. They have a superlative record during the last three seasons and is shown below:

2015/16 – Division 1

P22 W 15 D 4 L 3 F 83 A 26 Pts 49

2016/17 – Championship

P20 W 18 D 2 L 0 F 68 A 19 Pts 56

2017/18 – Premier Division

P22 W 17 D 3 L 2 F 84 A 36 Pts 54

That is represented by a Grand Total of:

P 64 W 50 D 9 L 5 F 235 A 81 Pts 159 (out of a possible total of 192 with an 83% win rate)

These figures are remarkable and cannot recall any team making quite such a formidable start. Bob Greenwood managed the team for the first two season but Steve Phillips has come in and master- minded the Premier Division success.

During these three seasons we have seen, firstly in 15/16, Shane Sowden win the Golden Boot with 30 goals. Shane was third in 16/17 with 18 goals with Harvey Booth finding the Golden Boot the perfect fit in season 17/18 with 23 goals.
