Yorkshire Amateur league Results for 16th April 2018

Bradford Saturday Senior Cup

Wibsey 2 Idle 0

Watched some of this on Facebook but did not record any chances for Idle but there were two in the first half of which one was saved and the second went wide, and this in a half edged by Idle. 0-0 up to 75 minutes as Idle then tired and were caught out by a couple of balls over the top. It msut be said a terrific achievement for Idle to become the first YAL club to reach the Bradford and District Cup Semi-final and they can look back with pride on their progression in this competition this year.

Premier Division

Drighlington 3 Grangefield OB 0

Drighlington rise to second after their 3-0 victory over Grangefield. All the goals in the first half with one for Harvey Booth after 25 minutes and the other two for Shane Sowden in the 35th and 44th minutes. Drighlington closed the game down n the second half but a penalty for Grangefield missed in the 60th minute and one missed by Drig in the 89th minute. Drig second with 13 wins from 14 matches. Grangefield are seventh.

Leeds Medics & Dentists 1 Alwoodley 1

A full report later but Jamie Sheard gave Alwoodley a 1-0 lead. They dominated the game but they unsurprisingly tired in the last 15 minutes after a plethora of difficult games and James Catterill equalised in the 87th minute for Medics. Alwoodley are fourth with Medics still top of the Premier Division but it is looking good for Drighlington who are two points behind Medics with five matches in hand.

Championship

Shire Academics 0 Horsforth St Margaret’s 1

This was one helluva contest with numerous players missing from both teams. Competitive is the right word with one goal separating the contestants. Even that goal brought about animated discussion. It was simply claimed by Jake Williams of Horsforth but going wide say Shire until diverted by a Shire player into his own net. Shire are sixth with Horsforth leading the table, level on points with Calverley but with three games in hand.

Div 3

Leeds City OB Res 3 Shire Academics Res 3

In terms of the drive for promotion a super point for Shire Res who are second and four points behind leaders Horsforth Res with a game in hand. Leeds City OB Res are five points behind Shire but have played one more game than Shire.SEAN WHEATLEY x1 and BEN CAWOOD x2 for Shire.

North Leeds 5 Morley Town AFC III 1

Good win for North Leeds who continue to improve. They are eighth with Morley Town III sixth.

Disappointment for Alwoodley this evening, as Leeds Medics snatched an equaliser just 3 minutes from time ! The visitors had their chances to put the game to bed after taking a first half lead but failed to take them & Medics made them pay.

MOM – JOSH KIRK (Alwoodley) – Strong in the tackle, denied Medics numerous times, superb distribution and immense work rate for 90 minutes.

An even contest in midfield early doors, good football but neither producing anything upfront. Alwoodley increased the tempo & created more chances than Medics. They had a strong shout for a penalty turned down by referee Roger Byrne, Rob Oxley’s shot, went just wide from distance midway through the half then a thunderbolt 25 yard drive from Damir Mulavdic crashed against the bar & away to safety. Medics worked hard but created few chances on target. Despite all the possession & some pressure it seemed as though the visitors weren’t going to score...... until with 28 minutes played Jamie Sheard put them in front curling his free kick over the defence & inside the far post. A virtual carbon copy of his opening goal Saturday ! A half chance for Medics just before the interval, the Alwoodley keeper saving easily from a Fransisco Matos effort. The hosts started the second half a bit better. Hugh Goodfield’s deflected shot went close, but they had little else to show for all their efforts. In general the visitors were the better side for a lot of the half, quicker all over the pitch, & more creative. Danny Ashton missed an easy chance, Dino Mulavdic headed wide from a corner & Dan Whincup failed to beat the keeper one on one. Alwoodley were looking tired towards the finish. Medics were determined to salvage something from the game. On top near the end they were rewarded with an equaliser in the 87th minute when Johnny Catteral stretched out a leg to convert from Kieran Wardman’s cross. Two good last minute stops prevented an unlikely Medics victory !

Thanks to all players team managers, Dr. Ledger (Medics), Brett Gaunt (Alwoodley),supporters & the referee for an enjoyable game.

PLEASE NOTE – Other than midweek league games these 2 sides have big cup semi-finals to play, this coming week. YOUR SUPPORT WOULD BE APPRECIATED, as Leeds Medics take on Robin Hood Athletic In The Leeds & District Senior Cup, at Bracken Edge (Yks. Amateur Grd.) Thursday 19th April, 7.30 k.o., then Alwoodley v Ilkley Town in the prestigious West Riding County Cup, Wednesday 25th April at West Riding HQ, Fleet Lane Woodlesford.
