Yorkshire Old Boys League Results for 9th, September 2006
For the attention of Stuart Martel/Wendy Walker
It was a case of heads you win at Weetwood where the home side Leeds University OB beat Stanningley OB 3-1. A Kieron Blair goal midway through the first half gave Stanningley a deserved 1-0 half time lead. Three goals early in the second half clinched the game for revitalised University. All goals were headers coming from Ian Plant (46 mins), Chris Ross (52 mins) and Nick Walsh (57 mins). Leeds Medics & Dentists started their season with a victory. Ritchie Robinson’s first half goal against a much-improved Huddersfield Amateur was decisive. A fine East Leeds local derby between Western Juniors and St Nicholas ended goalless. Marc Hitchings of St Nicholas was the nearest to scoring hitting the bar with 10 minutes to go. The keepers Scott McAllister of Western and Joe Stewart of St Nicholas were not overworked but nevertheless should take a bow.
In Senior B, FC Headingley put in a superb display to beat Old Centralians 3-0. FC Headingley led at half time after an 8th minute shot from Charlie Allard. Richard Tonks scored the second as he coolly finished a 5-man move in the 55th minute whilst Charlie Allard added his second with a header with 15 minutes left. Leeds City OB took the lead against Ealandians through Mark Scarsella. Ealandians equalised through Jason Tiplady before half time. Jason added two more to complete his hat trick in the second period with a second Mark Scarsella goal a mere consolation with almost the last kick of the game in the 3-2 defeat. Hosts Gildersome Spurs OB have now beaten Calverley 4-3 in the last three meetings between the clubs. This time, in a deserved success, Jon Scholey, Ben Keedy 2 and Lee Thrush netted for Gildersome Spurs with goals for Paul Adams 2 and Paul Kemp just keeping them in the game. There was little doubt that Wortley FC was lucky to take all three points against an East Ardsley side that was reduced to 10 men in the second half. Wortley held a 2-0 half time led from Ronnie Worrel and Jason Walls but pressure and possession in an excellent East Ardsley revival could only produce a Rob Kelly riposte.
In Division 1 South Leeds Saints made an exciting debut. They were level 1-1 at half time with Leeds Medics III. Medics went into a 3-1 lead but South Leeds Saints recovered to take a point. The goals for Medics III scored by Craig Goddard, Matt Bridge and Chris Smith with goals for Saints from Ryan Closney, Andrew Marshall and Christian Boland. Two goals from Martin Roberts helped Old Thornesians recover from a 2-0 half time deficit against Colton Academicals. It was Colton who scored late in the game to make the score 3-2 with their shooting stars Scott Aveyard, James Baldwin and Oleg Mori. Leeds City OB Reserves beat Sandal Athletic 2-1 after a 1-0 scoreline at half time. Goals notched by Rio Comrie and Marcus Stapleton for Leeds City with the earlier Ian Cooper equaliser for Sandal Athletic failing to clinch a point. There is little doubt that Shire Academicals are making an impressive start in Division 1. The got the better of Roundhegians Reserves 5-1 with goals from Luke Croager 2, Ari Nurmi and James Owen 2 with the sole Roundhegians reply from Mike Kempster.
In Division 2 Wheelwright OB showed no pity on understrength Leeds Independent triumphing 9-0. Goals for Daz Green 3, Craig Fryer 2, Paul Hegarty, Guy Willows, Sean Place and an og. Wortley FC Res enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 win at Agnes Stewart OB with goals from Curt Lewis, Tom Bailey and Matthew Hatfield with a Paul Hatfield own goal counting for Agnes Stewart. Lee Thackrah gave Centralians Res a 1-0 lead at Carlton Athletic. The improving home side drew level with a penalty from Danny Burke but Lee Thackrah completed his brace in the second half to give Centralians Res the three points at 2-1. Commonside OB lost 2-1 at home to Gildersome Spurs OB Res finding themselves 2-0 down at half time from Karl Bailey and Jordan Hay strikes. Simon Westbury reduction of the Commonside arrears in the second half failed to bring any reward.
In Div 3 a Lloyd Jackson hat trick and a goal from Craig Baker earned East Leeds Trinity OB a good 4-1 advantage at Thornesians Reserves with the latter’s goal from Mark Carlton. Huddersfield Amateur Reserves succumbed to Moortown OB 5-3 with Moortown relying on Paul Morrison 1, Stuart Young, Al Slatter 2 and Des Gilchrist to overcome Huddersfield Amateur strikes from Adam Sharp 2 and Joe Hennigan. Gildersome Spurs OB III shared two goals with Colton Academicals Res. The impressive Danny Phillips on target for Gildersome and Pete Hutchinson notched his first of the season for Colton Reserves. St Bedes Res at last found their shooting boots with Willard Gono 2, Si Massey and Mark Hayward on song to enable them to beat a surprised Grangefield 4-3 with efforts from Doug Gaylor and Yaz Sarhi accounting for two of the three Grangefield goals.
